As previously mentioned, Heritage Woodworks is an exemplary home builder that offers top-notch properties in the greater Sheridan area.

Recently, we sat down for a Q&A session with Matt Hill, the licensed general contractor and co-owner of Heritage Woodworks, Inc. Here are exerpts from that conversation:

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you arrived in Sheridan.

A. My wife, Kristin, and I are Wyoming natives and grew up in Worland. After college and marriage, we moved to Bozeman, MT in 2003 where I worked as a log craftsman and project supervisor for Lohss Construction building custom homes in the Yellowstone Club near Big Sky.

These rustic style homes ranged in size from 1,500 – 10,000 square feet and incorporated handscribed logs, reclaimed wood, hand-hewn timber details, and natural stone.

In July 2012, Lohss Construction was awarded a contract near Story, so we jumped at the opportunity to move back to Wyoming and to live in Sheridan with our young family.

Q. What made you decide to form your own company?

A. I enjoyed working for Lohss Construction and gained invaluable experience during my 11-year tenure. With that said, Kristin and I had dreamed of owning our own company for several years, but the timing was never quite right.

During the fall of 2014, everything fell into place for us. Instead of opting to return to Bozeman, we decided to start our own company in Sheridan. We incorporated as Heritage Woodworks in October 2014 and became fully operational on January 1, 2015. Our emphasis on old world craftsmanship and integration of reclaimed materials in our projects embodies the spirit of our company and its name.

Q. How would you describe your building style? Do you build log homes?
A. With my construction experience and that of my team, we can build in any architectural style. However, we do tend to focus on projects that include some level of rustic or natural detailing – whether that’s square timbers, reclaimed wood, or handscribed logs.

In terms of log homes, we do not build traditional full-stack log homes or log kits, but we can replicate the look through our unique building process. We start by framing all of our structures with dimensional lumber. Dependent on the architectural plan and client preferences, we then add a combination of handscribed logs, timbers, reclaimed wood, and natural stone as exterior cladding and decorative accents inside and outside the home.

For those clients who want the look of a log home, we mill our own log slab siding, leaving full round ends that we then handscribe and notch together. After the chinking has been added, most people would never guess it’s not a full-stack log home, and better yet, clients then have none of the issues associated with log homes (like settling, bugs, draftiness, difficult mechanical rough-in, etc.) This also affords clients the same interior finish options as any other traditional home, so they can decide to go with a full log look inside, strictly drywall/plaster, or a mix of drywall and wood detailing.

Q. Do you just build custom homes?
A. No, we’re happy to work with a variety of project types, including ranch accessory structures, log archways, log and timber detailing on commercial or residential buildings, residential remodels, custom playhouses, etc.

If a client has a project in mind, we can generally work with them to make it a reality. In addition, we’re licensed to do custom milling and make retail sales of reclaimed wood to the general public. With our mill, we can put together log or timberframe packages for other contractors, create roughsawn lumber and beams out of logs up to 32 feet long, and re-saw 2x and 3x barnwood into 1x lumber as well as create live-edge log siding.

Lastly, our handcrafted log and reclaimed wood furniture is available through private order with some pieces downtown at Accents of Wyoming.
